IA in Art

Industry and art? Absolutely! Think Bauhaus, Charles Sheeler and Louis Lozowick for starters.

Then take a look at what Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island have to offer. (If you know of other IA and art connections in the southern New England states -- or just about anywhere else -- please alert the webmaster.)

  • Arthur Ganson’s Sculptures
Brilliant, witty and even elegaic sculptures that initially dazzle you with their ingenuity, then remain in your imagination for their quirky, almost melancholy beauty.
  • MIT Museum
One of the underappreciated jewels of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Probably most famous for the strobe photography of Harold "Doc" Edgerton. Also features the sculptures of Arthur Ganson.
  • MASS MoCA
Nestled in the former Sprague Electronics factories in North Adams, MASS MoCA offers one of the nation's largest and most distinctive gallery spaces for contemporary art. The architecture of the old mill buildings alone makes the trip worthwhile.
  • Shaun O’Boyle’s Photographs
An online gallery that explores the rewards of architectural decay -- including the ruins of many significant industrial sites.
  • Animated Engines
Not high art, but artful, animated illustrations of historically significant engine types.
  • Lighthouse Postcards
From the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, an online collection of lighthouse postcards by state and region.
